Roger D. Hyman
Managing Partner
Roger D. Hyman (Vanderbilt University, B.A. 1979, and University of Tennessee, J.D. 1984) has been licensed to practice law in Tennessee since 1984. He is also licensed to practice in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee, the United States District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee, and the United States District Court for the Western District of Tennessee, as well as the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.
Mr. Hyman has tried cases (including more than one hundred (100) jury trials)—and hundreds of “bench trials”–in the trial courts of Anderson, Blount, Campbell, Carter, Claiborne, Cocke, Cumberland, Grainger, Greene, Hamblen, Hamilton, Hancock, Hawkins, Jefferson, Knox, Loudon, McMinn, Monroe, Morgan, Putnam, Roane, Scott, Sevier, Union, and Washington Counties, Tennessee, as well as the United States District Courts for both the Eastern District of Tennessee (both the Northern Division at Knoxville and the Southern Division at Chattanooga), and also the United States District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee (in the Nashville Division).
He also has experience practicing (having been admitted Pro Hac Vice) in the trial courts of the following North Carolina Counties: Cherokee, Graham, Haywood and Macon, as well as in the United States District Court for the Eastern Division of Virginia (Alexandria Division).
Mr. Hyman also has successful appellate practice before the Tennessee Court of Appeals and the Tennessee Supreme Court, including having helped to “make new law” in the Tennessee Supreme Court case Blevins v. Johnson County, 746 S.W.2d 678 (Tenn. 1988), as well as the federal Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Mr. Hyman is also a Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 31 Listed General Civil and Family Mediator, and is Specially Trained in Domestic Violence Issues, and also Trained in Elder Mediation.
Roger D. Hyman is a Member of the Tennessee Bar Association, and is also a Member of the Knoxville Bar Association, where he serves on the Judicial Committee.
Mr. Hyman has often been a speaker at conferences and Continuing Legal Education Seminars in the field of Real Estate Law (teaching other attorneys and professionals), and has been recognized by numerous awards and publications, including:

Roger D. Hyman was born in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and grew up in Rochester and then Pittsford, New York (where he graduated High School). He returned to Tennessee in 1975 for college, and has remained ever since. He attended Vanderbilt University (Nashville, Tennessee, 1975-79), College of Arts & Sciences, majoring in Political Science. While at Vanderbilt, Mr. Hyman was active with the Radio Station (WRVU), and played four years on the Mens’ Soccer Team, earning a “Varsity Letter” following his Senior season (1978, when the team was elevated to NCAA Division I).
Mr. Hyman’s Employment History includes Oak Ridge National Laboratory (Summer Employment during and after college), and in the Broadcasting industry (between college and law school), including news reporting, as an “on-air” personality (“DJ”), and as Program Director, at WRVU (Nashville), WKGN (Knoxville), WKDA/WKDF (Nashville) and WBIR-FM (Knoxville)—now WIMZ, where he was responsible for “converting” the format from Country Music to “Album Rock Music”. At the time, Mr. Hyman was recognized as the youngest Program Director of a 100,000 watt FM radio station in the United States.
Mr. Hyman also worked for two (2) years as a Law Clerk for Key, Lee & Layman, Attorneys (Knoxville).
After finishing Law School (and completing the Tennessee Bar Exam) Mr. Hyman worked as an Associate Attorney for Hindman & HOLT, Attorneys (Tommy K. Hindman and J. Nicklas Holt) (1984-86), gaining valuable trial experience.
In February, 1986 Mr. Hyman was named an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Tennessee, serving in the Real Property & Transportation Division, in the Knoxville Branch Office; while there, Mr. Hyman tried more than fifty (50) Jury Trials, and numerous bench trials, covering a territory of 24 counties of East Tennessee.
In February, 1995, Mr. Hyman returned to private practice, and opened the Law Offices of Roger D. Hyman in Loudon, Tennessee. By November, 1995 the office was relocated to Clinton Highway (US 25W) in Powell, Tennessee, and later evolved into Hyman & Carter, Attorneys and then Hyman & Carter, PLLC. By 2008 the firm became Hyman, Carter & Patel, PLLC and relocated (to its present location in Knoxville, Tennessee), and then evolved into General Knox Law, P.C. on June 1, 2016, and added offices in Nashville, Tennessee and Birmingham, Alabama.
Over the years, Mr. Hyman has now tried more than one hundred (100) Jury Trials in both State and Federal Courts in Tennessee, and in North Carolina, and also hundreds of “bench trials” and Hearings; he has also appeared before several Appellate courts, including the Tennessee Court of Appeals, the Tennessee Supreme Court, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.
Mr. Hyman and his wife, Elsa have been married since 1997, and they have two children (a son and daughter); he also has a daughter from his previous marriage. Mr. Hyman has been a member of Norwood Church of Christ (Knoxville, Tennessee) since 1977, where he and his family remain active, faithful members.
Mr. Hyman has been active (“off and on” for more than thirty years) as a Baseball (“Sandy Koufax League”) and Youth Soccer Coach (both AYSO and Knox County Schools); he is certified as an AYSO Advanced Coach, Coach Instructor, and an Advanced Referee. In 1987 and 1988 he served as the Assistant Coach for Powell Middle School Boys’ Soccer, and in 1989 and 1990 as Assistant Coach for Powell High School Boys’ Soccer. In 2014 he was asked to take over as Head Coach for Powell Middle School 8th Grade Boys’ Soccer, and was then thankful to “retire” as his son “moved on” to High School!
Mr. Hyman has played recreational “Adult League” softball and soccer; he played a few seasons of Softball during the 1980’s for Grayson Pontiac, and has played Soccer (Knoxville Metro Soccer League) during the 1980’s and now continuously since 2008, where he continues to play (and manage) in the “Masters’ Division” (“Over 40 men”).
Mr. Hyman has also been very active in Scouting; he has served as a Cub Scout Leader (Assistant Cubmaster, Cubmaster, and Webelos Den Leader) from 2008 through 2011, and has been Scoutmaster of Troop 238 (Knoxville) since May, 2011, earning the following awards: Scouter’s Key Award for Boy Scouting (Scoutmaster), 2014; Unit Leader Award of Merit (Scoutmaster), 2013; Scouter’s Training Award for Boy Scouting, 2013; Scouter’s Training Award for Cub Scouting, 2015; James E. West Fellowship Award (GSMC), 2012; William D. Boyce “New Unit Organizer” Award (Troop 238), 2012; Webelos Den Leader Award, 2012; Cubmaster Award, 2011; William D. Boyce “New Unit Organizer” Award (Pack 238) (2010); “Wood Badge”, 2012.
Mr. Hyman has now been asked to be Scoutmaster for one of the three Troops being sent by Great Smoky Mountain Council to the 2017 BSA National Jamboree in West Virginia.
Mr. Hyman’s son is an Eagle Scout with Troop 238, and he played both Varsity Soccer and Varsity Football with his High School, and now attends the University of Tennessee. and Mr. Hyman’s younger daughter is a Girl Scout.
