Our History
The origins of our law firm date back to 1995 when the founder, Roger D. Hyman, Esq., opened the Law Offices of Roger D. Hyman, after serving for nine years as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Tennessee, working in the Real Property and Transportation Division of the State Attorney General’s Office in Knoxville, Tennessee.
In late 1996, Mr. Hyman began a partnership with C. Philip Carter M.D., Esq., a physician and attorney. The firm became Hyman & Carter, PLLC, with its office on Clinton Highway in Powell, Tennessee.
In April 2016, the decision was made to convert from a Professional Limited Liability Company (PLLC) to a Professional Corporation (P.C.), and for a brief period of time the firm was known as Hyman, Carter & Patel, P.C.
Effective June 1, 2016—in response to rules changes, which formerly required law firms in Tennessee to reflect the names of its partners—the firm became General Knox Law, P.C., adopting its new name both for descriptive purposes (the firm is a “General Practice Law Firm” with its headquarters in Knox County, Tennessee) and to honor the namesake of Knoxville and Knox County (General Henry Knox.)
By August 2016, the law firm added Alicia J. McMurray-Smith, Esq., to the Knoxville office and also opened new offices in Nashville, Tennessee (staffed by Dr. Carter’s son, Timothy P. Carter, Esq.).

Who is General Henry Knox
Henry Knox (1750–1806) was a military officer in the Continental Army and later in the United States Army. During the Revolutionary War, he served as General George Washington’s Chief Artillery Commander.
Henry Knox earned the respect and life-long friendship of George Washington; he was his right-hand man throughout the war and stood beside him crossing the Delaware River in 1776. Following the adoption of the United States Constitution, General Knox became President Washington’s first United States Secretary of War.
Today, towns and cities in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine and Tennessee are named “Knox” or “Knoxville” in his honor. There are counties named for General Knox in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, Tennessee and Texas. Two forts, one in Kentucky and one in Maine, are also named after General Knox.
